Hawk started working for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) in late summer of 1992 where he quickly teamed up with young mid-carder Kensuke Sasaki who was soon dubbed "Power Warrior" as he adopted the trademark Road Warrior face paint and spiked shoulder pads.

It wasn't until Animal came back from his back injury in '96, where he rejoined with Hawk in Japan where the three were announced collectively as the Road Warriors,
