In '92 The Road Warriors temporarily split up. Hawk started working for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) where he started tagging with a Kensuke Sasaki as The Hell Raisers and Animal made some non-wrestling appearances in WCW in 1993 but stayed out of the wrestling ring due to an injury. Near the end of 1995, Animal's' back had finally recovered enough for him to return to active competition.

It wasn't until Animal came back from his back injury in '96, where he rejoined with Hawk in Japan where the three were announced collectively as the Road Warriors,
